Stronger when Together: Edsa People Power Anniversary

Image
By: Cyrus Cuenca Romualdo Photo By: Alona Myka Balbastro  Let's recall an important event that has happened in the past.    EDSA is the acronym for Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. It is the main road in Metro Manila, where a crucial part of our country's history takes place. On the 22nd day of February 1986, millions of Filipinos hoard and march along the road. It is to peacefully stop the dictatorial leadership of President Ferdinand E. Marcos as well as obtain true freedom and democracy. The protest continued until February 25, 1986. By virtue of Proclamation No. 59, s. 1987 was declared the first anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.   Let us always remember that "we can achieve everything when we are together," just like how the millions of Filipinos stood up in those days to achieve the freedom that our country deserved.

Ash Wednesday, Holy Day of Prayer and Fasting

Image
By: Claire Tolentino Photo By: Gio Anderson Laylo "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Each year, Catholics begin the Lent season by putting an ash cross on their forehead to commemorate the life and hardships of Jesus. By putting ash, Catholics show their repentance and recognize their mortality. This ash is made from burned blessed palm leaves used in last year's Palm Sunday when people welcomed Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem before being crucified. To strengthen their faith, people penance by fasting that continues for 6 weeks until Easter Sunday, the day of His resurrection.  May this season of reflection and renewal bring spiritual growth and peace to all who partake in it.

Commemorating Philippine- American Memorial Day

Image
By: Myka Jen Llanera Photo by: Emmanuel Ombina Every February 4, people pay tribute to the Philippine-American War. It may be considered an extension of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule, which took place during the Philippine–American War. After Spain's defeat in the Spanish-American War, the Treaty of Paris was signed which granted the United States control over the Philippines. To prevent the Philippines from gaining independence, the US attempted to annex the country. This resulted in the leaders of the Filipino people, who governed the entire archipelago except Manila, retaliating. The Philippine-American War raged between the US and Filipino revolutionaries from 1899 to 1902. Although some fighting continued for several years, the US declared an official end to the war in 1902. Except for World War II, the United States maintained complete control over the archipelago until 1946. As we celebrate this day, we honor the bravery and selflessness of the men and wom

By: Claire Laroza Photo By: Alona Myka Balbastro Every year on February 3, we pay tribute to a significant event in our history - the Anniversary of the Battle of Manila's Liberation. This crucial battle was a part of the Philippine campaign that took place from 1944 to 1945. The battle was waged in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, where U.S. and Filipino forces bravely stood against the Japanese invaders. The conflict, which lasted for a month, resulted in the city's destruction and the tragic loss of nearly 100,000 lives. During the battle, Japanese troops carried out massacres of Filipino villagers, and American artillery also led to numerous casualties. The resistance from the Japanese and the American gunfire severely damaged most of Manila’s architectural and cultural heritage. The city of Manila was among the most devastated capitals during the war, comparable to Berlin and Warsaw. The end of this conflict marked a significant turning point - the cessation of th
