Easter Sunday 2024: The Most Sacred Day in the Christian Calendar

Image
BY: James Dioneda PHOTO BY: Emmanuel Ombina The resurrection of Jesus serves as the fundamental basis for the Christian faith, making Easter a significant event on the Christian calendar. It's worth noting that Easter falls on a different date each year. According to the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus was resurrected three days after being crucified by the Romans, which took place around 30 A.D. This significant event concludes the "Passion of Christ," a series of events and holidays that begins with 40 days During Holy Week, the culmination of the Passion of Christ is observed. It begins with Holy Thursday (also known as "Maundy Thursday"), commemorating Jesus' Last Supper with his 12 Apostles, celebrated on March 28, 2024. Moreover, the Easter Bunny is a fun tradition in many households, delivering candy and chocolate eggs to children on Easter Sunday. It symbolizes new life and renewal associated with springtime. While not a religious symbol, the Eas

The Tomb of Messiah

Image
BY: Jhon Vincent Compio  PHOTO BY: Alona Myka Balbastro Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, ⁵¹ who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. ⁵² Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. ⁵³ Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. ⁵⁴ It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. On this day, Holy Saturday we reflect and mourn. It serves as a mark of the time when Jesus was laid in the tomb, fulfilling the prophecy of his death and resurrection. It is a time of preparation and reflection, as the Christians anticipate the ce

The Good Friday: A Day of Renewal

Image
BY: Ron Wesley Mendoza PHOTO BY: Alona Myka Balbastro On the Friday before Easter Sunday, March 29, we commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, symbolizing renewal, and redemption, and hope to serve as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for humanity. From the Christian perspective, Good Friday makes the deepest spiritual impression, since it embodies the greatest parable of Jesus’ sacrifice for humans’ salvation. According to Christian theology, Jesus underwent crucifixion willingly and experienced terrible agonies and disgrace.  Adoration of Good Friday by Christian denominations and cultures appears in different forms involving church services, pilgrimages, and self-reflection in the form of prayers. For some churches, Holy Week is especially liturgical, with the Gospel Passion narrative as the main theme of the services, forgiveness, repentance, and salvation being the underscores of the sermons. Christianity has a long tradition of marking the

Jesus Cleanses Our Soul and Sacrifice Himself.

Maundy Thursday is remembering the last supper of our Lord Jesus Christ with his apostles before he suffered and crucified himself. Jesus eats his last meal with his 12 disciples. Christ touches and washes the hands of his 12 disciples. He cleansed them and taught them to love each other as he loved them. John 13:34 – “I give you a new commandment, that ye love one another as I have loved you”. Christ's Last Supper reminds us of the importance of humility, humbleness, selflessness, and service. This Maundy Thursday let us all reminisce the words and lessons from our Lord Jesus Christ for everyone needs lo

Thou Cometh to the Messiah: Tranquility Before Chaos

Image
BY: Michelle Angeline Villanueva PHOTO BY: Jhon Lenard Abawag People tend to rejoice and proclaim peace on their land. They join the crowd that shouts the name of their perceived savior, hearing this phrase, “Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!" This time, Jesus arrived being called a king, greeted by waving palm branches and warm shouts from the crowd of Jerusalem. These people, dear to his heart. . . Might be the same people that broke it. I wonder how a celebratory event feels tragic when viewed in an entirely different way. While most Christians consider this peaceful, this is tragic in the deepest sense for Jesus. This scenario has been reliving up to this day through Palm Sunday. Jesus rode a donkey and was treated highly as he entered Jerusalem. The people who had heard about his miracles were there cheering Him, believing that he was the one in the prophecy. They believe that he is the king or the messiah

The simple act of switching off lights for one hour underscores the impact collective action can have in the fight against climate change. This year's Earth Hour comes at a crucial time. With the escalating climate crisis, the need for urgent action has never been more crucial. The recent wildfires, floods, and extreme weather events across the globe have underscored the harsh reality of climate change. Earth Hour 2024 serves as a stark reminder that we must ac

I regret I have but one life to give my country - Santos

In March 1942, Santos displayed steadfast patriotism when he was invited by President Manuel Quezon to leave with him to the United States as a result of a rapidly advancing Japanese invasion. However, Santos declined, preferring to remain in the Philippines. Before he departed for the United States on March 17, 1942, Quezon appointed Santos as the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He served as the Philippines' Chief Justice during the Second World War. Santos showed extraordinary bravery and patriotism for his native country. He was executed as a result of turning down a request to leave the nation and refusing to assist the Japanese when they captured him. Because of his martyrdom and resistance to the Japanese occupation during World War II, Santos is depicted alongside two other heroes on the one thousand peso bill. Duri

A day to be unique, Unique Names Day 2024

Image
By: Shemiah Azarel Del Mundo Photo By: Alona Myka Balbastro Do u have a unique name? Do u have a second name? Or even a third name? In many cultures around the world, birthdays aren't the only special occasion that deserves recognition. March 5, is the date marked for Unique Names Day on the holiday calendar. An annual celebration dedicated to those who have unique names and those people who are often asked “How do I pronounce your name?” Onomatology hobbyist Jerry Hill is behind the origin of this day in 1997.  According to him “There was a time in history when names sounded almost the same. But as we started to settle down as farming groups around 12,000 years ago, the need to distinguish each person and assign them a role became more important. As a result, more sophisticated names started to appear. The Romans later started using the ‘tria nomina system,’ which translates to ‘the three names.’ They used three names in a single name. This system did not survive long but still sh
