International Workers' Day, also known as Labor Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that are promoted by the international labor movement.
In the Philippines, May 1 is known as "Labor Day" (Filipino: Araw ng Manggagawa, also known as Araw ng Paggawa) and is a public holiday in the Philippines. On this day, labor organizations and unions hold protests in major cities. On 1 May 1903, during the American colonial period, the Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina (Filipino Democratic Labor Union) held a rally in front of the Malacañang Palace demanding workers' economic rights and Philippine independence.
In 1908, the Philippine Assembly passed a bill officially recognizing May 1 as a national holiday. In 1913, the first official celebration was held on 1 May 1913 when 36 labor unions convened for a congress in Manila.
During the Presidency of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a policy was adopted called the holiday economics policy that moved holidays to either a Monday or a Friday to create a long weekend of three days. In 2002, Labor Day was moved to the Monday nearest to May 1. Labor groups protested as they accused the Arroyo administration of belittling the holiday. By 2008, Labor Day was excluded from the holiday economics policy, returning the commemorations to May 1, no matter what day of the week it falls on.
Meanwhile, some countries celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in May, Some countries celebrate Labor Day on other dates significant to them, such as the United States and Canada, which celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September.
While working people take rest from their usual labor, let's take this opportunity to gather with them and make them enjoy relaxation. May this occasion pay tribute to the courageous individuals who stand for our rights and represent our best interests. Let us cultivate a deeper appreciation for our privileges and respect the spirit of the movement’s message.
