"The power of a pen is more than anything. Let us use it wisely for the benefit of our society."

Freedom of the press provides individuals and organizations the right to express, publish, and share information, ideas, and opinions without fear of censorship or government interference. It does not cover things like defamation, hate speech, and incitement to violence. It also holds the powerful accountable, and share information that educates the public.

World Press Freedom Day was declared by the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Furthermore,it was first celebrated in 1993, following the recommendation of the General Conference of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The date May 3 was chosen to commemorate the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of press freedom principles put forth by African journalists in Windhoek, Namibia, in 1991.

However, the United Nations' 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers."

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3 to prompt governments worldwide to respect and protect the freedom of expression of journalists and media workers. It is a very important day to journalists worldwide as they reflect on issues affecting press freedom and professional ethics.

It is also a day to observe the greatness of independent media in strengthening democracy and honoring those who fully gave their lives while doing their jobs.

In these times, misinformation is rampant. We do not know if what we hear is true or just lies. So it is important to be careful, to be cautious of the information we receive so that we are not deceived and harmed. Be wise in receiving information. Be open minded. Do not be afraid to speak the truth. Instead, let the information shares properly and benefit the people.

On this occasion, Wish you a very Happy World Press Freedom Day! Join the movement, speak free, and let your voices be heard on this day. Be free and speak your heart out!
