When we hear the word “kagitingan” which means bravery in English, what comes to mind? It could be the heroes in our lives, such as generals, police officers, health workers, and more. There are modern heroes in our world, but we must remember the sacrifices and love for the country of those who fought in the past, even giving their lives for the freedom of the nation.
The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan or Bataan Day, occurred on April 9, 1942, when American General Edward P. King of the American Army surrendered with Filipino, Chinese, and American soldiers. They were forced to March, which we call the Bataan Death March. During this march, many died due to dehydration, starvation, and other causes before they could reach the camp.
Even though they were defeated in World War II, they fought for the country, and on the Day of Valor, we must remember that whether we win or lose the fight, as long as we fight for the Nation's freedom, That is the true meaning of love and loyalty for the country.
"A man is a patriot if his heart beats true to his country – Charles E. Jefferson
