International Sign Language Day 2023

Do you know what sign language is? Sign language is also known as visual language. It makes use of gestures and hand forms. Each sign language has its unique grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. The use of sign language as a medium for interaction and communication builds on these hand motions. Sign language opens up channels of communication for all racial and socioeconomic groups, regardless of whether you have hearing loss, difficulty comprehending speech in English, are deaf or hard of hearing, or can speak it fairly well.


International Day of Sign Languages 2023 is celebrated every 23rd of September. The theme for 2023 International Day of Sign languages is "A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!". The world will highlight the unity generated by sign languages. According to research, UN General Assembly has proclaimed 23rd of September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.  


According to Marian Portinto, a 1st Year student taking Communication Arts at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Lipa (KLL) says that sign language is important because it helps every individual that are disabled to know things that is common to everyone. It helps and letting them to have opportunities to learn how to communicate, socialize and understand things that a normal people always do. She also said that it is important to celebrate the international sign language day because it is an achievement for all people that we are in advance society that we can communicate not just through verbal but also through non-verbal communication. It also represent the right of every PWDs (deaf or mute) to have freedom in stating their opinions and ideas. Knowing the value of sign language is crucial because it enables people who are deaf or mute to realize that, despite their disabilities, there are ways for them to communicate. 


To further expand our knowledge on International Sign Language day, we interviewed a 1st year student, who also support the International Sign Language Day.


Erica Mae Lara believes that sign language is important because it still a language, a way of communicating. Especially for the people who are not be able to hear and talk. Just like words and voices, through sign language, we can express ourselves. She thought that it has to be recognized, celebrating International Sign Language Day is a way to appreciate an important means of communication. As we celebrate it, we remember that sign language helps a lot in conveying messages and information. 


In conclusion, celebrating International Sign Language Day aims to support and acknowledge those deaf and mute people, for them to continue to fight all the discriminations they experience and all the battles in their lives. Today, let’s support the International Sign Language Day 2023 and even if we are not celebrating this kind of event, we should still give support and love to all our dearest deaf and mute people. Let us all say "A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!".
